If it’s just happened

If you have just experienced any form of sexual violence you may feel unsure about what you should do next or how you should take care of yourself. In this page we have pulled together some advice for someone that has just experienced a form of sexual violence.

No matter what has happened, it wasn’t your fault. You don’t need to cope alone. We believe you, and are here if you need support.

Your Immediate Safety.

Your safety must always come first. We understand that you might feel extremely unsafe after what has happened, but the first step is to get somewhere where there is no continuous threat to you, your body or your life.

  • Try to be somewhere that feels safe. If you are in danger, call 999.
  • If possible, see if a friend or someone you trust can be with you.

What does your body need right now?

When we are in shock it can take us a moment to recognise what our bodies need. Start with the most urgent things. Do you need some air? Do you need some water or food? Are you hurt?

  • If you are urgently injured you may have to visit the hospital.
  • If your injuries are treatable at home, we still recommend speaking to a Pharmacist or your GP.
  • You can call NHS 24 on 111 for health information and medical help out of hours if there is something you are worried about.
  • If you wash yourself, use safe products, not household cleaning products as they can be harmful. Be gentle with your body!

Concerned about pregnancy and/or sexual health complications?

IUD, Morning After Pill Worried about STDs?
  • If there is a possibility of pregnancy you may want to take the morning after pill (up to 72 hours after) or have a coil fitted (up to 5 days after).
  • You can get the morning after pill free if you let the pharmacist know you would like to get it on the NHS.
  • Or you can go to your Family Planning Clinic, genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic or GP. Find your nearest clinic.
  • If you are worried about sexually transmitted infections, you can have fully confidential advice and treatment from your nearest GUM clinic. You do not need a letter from your doctor. You don’t have to give the clinic your real name.

If you're thinking of reporting.

Not everyone chooses to report an incident of sexual violence. Deciding to report should always be your choice. You do not have to make that decision this very second. However if you think that at some point in the future you would like to report, there are ways for you to preserve evidence while you make up your mind.

paper bag
  • Forensic evidence can be gathered within seven days of an assault and you can self-refer for a Forensic Medical Examination (FME), meaning you don’t have to report first. You can find out more about FMEs here.
  • In case you do choose to report, keep the clothes you were wearing in a paper bag.
  • Depending on where in Scotland you are, you might be able to access a service that can store forensic evidence while you decide if you want to report. If you are considering reporting our advocacy team can help

✨ Daily Self-Care Habits ✨
Self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.
Small daily habits can create space for healing, comfort, and strength. Whether it’s taking a walk, drinking water, journaling, or simply breathing with intention, your care matters.

There’s no “right” way to show up for yourself. Go gently.
You are not alone.💜

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
Sex trafficking is a brutal form of gender-based violence, and it’s happening in our communities. Victims are often trapped through coercion, manipulation, and fear. Many are survivors of rape and violence.

At The STAR Centre, we support survivors of sex trafficking with trauma-informed care, advocacy, and a safe space to begin healing. No one should ever be exploited for someone else's gain.💜

For some survivors of sexual violence, sex can trigger flashbacks.

A flashback is when you re-experience a frightening or painful event from the past. It tends not to be like an ordinary memory, but more a sudden and unexpected intrusion. Flashbacks can present differently from person to person, but can be very distressing.

A flashback is part of your body's way of processing or reaching some understanding about what happened. It is not something you choose to do, and is not necessarily a reflection on the person you're with.

If you can speak to your partner about your experience of sexual violence, it may allow you to explain your flashbacks and agree in advance what you want to do if this happens. If you are struggling with flashbacks during sex, it is okay to take time out from the sexual side of your relationship. Your partner should respect your choice and support you .

If you are not able to, or don’t want to disclose your experience with your partner, you may find it helpful to establish boundaries within your intimate relationship and highlight what you are and are not comfortable with. Your partner may ask questions about this but remember, you do not have to disclose your experience if you are not comfortable doing so.

You’re not alone in this, and The STAR Centre is here to support you. Always.
